For the production of its studies and publications, and in order to set up an optimal classification of the data, Monaco Statistics uses nomenclatures and repositories. Here are the main ones :
Nomenclature d'activité française (NAF)
The NAF, nomenclature d’activités françaises (nomenclature of french activities) is a nomenclature of the economical productive activities, created primarily to organise the economical and social information. In order to facilitate the international comparisons, the NAF is based on the structure of the NACE, nomenclature des activités dans la Communauté européenne (statistical classification of economic activities in the European community), which is itself derived from the international nomenclature ISIC (International standard industrial classification of all economic activities).
It has 5 nested levels (sections, divisions, groups, classes and subclasses). The NAF code (or APE code) corresponds to the most detailed level: the subclass.
Monaco Statistics assigns a NAF code to any institution in Monaco as it is created.Thus, all the statistics related to the Principality’s economy that Monaco Statistics produces are derived from this nomenclature.
Monaco Statistics uses the NAF 2025 since January 1st 2026 and also defined its own separation into major economic sectors (MES) in order to be as close as possible to the composition of Monaco’s economy. Thus, fourteen MES, which form an aggregation of the 87 NAF divisions, have been selected.

Country Code - ISO 3166
The International Standard for country codes – ISO 3166 has as its main goal to define internationally recognised codes of letters and/or numbers that we can use when we refer to countries and subdivisions. However, it does not define the names of countries. This information comes from United Nations sources (Terminology Bulletin Country Names and the Country and Region Codes for Statistical Use maintained by the United Nations Statistics Divisions).

The codes of the ISO 3166 norm are available on the Online Browsing Platform (OBP).
ISO 3166 comprises three parts: country codes, country subdivisions codes, and country codes previously used (previous code to refer to a country, which are not used anymore).
ISO 3166 is regularly updated to take into account changes in country names and their subdivisions.
This repository only defines countries, not nationalities.
