The Population Census is now based on a new ‘register-based’ method of calculation, which involves bringing together the various existing databases and information systems (Monaco City Council's Civil Status and Nationality Department, Public Safety Department, National Education, Youth and Sport Department, Forward Planning and Mobility Department and Estates Administration).
This new method makes it possible to calculate changes in each of these data items every year, without having to conduct an exhaustive survey, which until now has taken place every 8 years.

As of 31 December 2024, the Principality of Monaco had 38,423 inhabitants, 56 more than a year earlier (+0.1%).
The population has almost doubled since 1951 and has grown by almost 6,500 since 2000.

Before the age of 30, the pyramid shows a very balanced distribution between men and women, with stable numbers of between 150 and 200 people per age and gender.
The age group between 50 and 70 has the highest numbers, with at least 230 people per age and sex, rising to 370 men (at 61) compared with 320 women (at 58), reflecting a predominance of men.
From the age of 70 onwards, women become the majority of the resident population, accounting for 54.5% of people of that age or over.
There are 67 centenarians in 2024, i.e. 0.2% of the population.
In 2024, Monegasques confirmed their position as the leading nationality represented in the Principality, with 24.1% of the population. Historically a minority (less than one in ten residents between 1908 and 1938), their share has grown steadily since then.

Housing units
In 2024, the Principality had 22,168 housing units, up 3.4% year-on-year.
Monte-Carlo and La Rousse districts together accounted for almost 10,000 of these (46.2%).
Despite the delivery in December 2024 of the 130-home Mareterra extension to the sea, Larvotto, along with Monaco-Ville, remains the district with the fewest homes (1,392 and 601, respectively).
The other four districts (La Condamine, Jardin Exotique, Fontvieille and Les Moneghetti) each have between 2,200 and 2,800 housing units.
