Population census

The population census is a fundamental tool for gaining a better understanding of the demographic and residential characteristics of a territory. In the Principality of Monaco, this statistical mission dates back to 1757 and has been regularly modernised since then.

The Population Census is now based on a new ‘register-based’ method of calculation, which involves bringing together the various existing databases and information systems (Monaco City Council's Civil Status and Nationality Department, Public Safety Department, National Education, Youth and Sport Department, Forward Planning and Mobility Department and Estates Administration).

This new method makes it possible to calculate changes in each of these data items every year, without having to conduct an exhaustive survey, which until now has taken place every 8 years.
